Canada Student Visa 2026 Study Permit Guide
A Canada Student Visa (Study Permit) allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. It also permits part‑time work (20 hours/week off‑campus) and full‑time during breaks.
Eligibility Requirements
- Letter of acceptance from a DLI
- Proof of funds: Tuition + $20,635 CAD (GIC) for living expenses + travel costs
- No criminal record (police certificate)
- Medical exam (if from designated country or studying healthcare)
- Intention to leave Canada after studies (temporary intent)
Step‑by‑Step Application
- Receive acceptance letter from DLI
- Pay tuition deposit (varies by school)
- Open a GIC account (e.g., Scotiabank, CIBC) and deposit $20,635
- Complete online application (fees: $150 + $85 biometrics)
- Give biometrics and attend interview (if requested)
- Receive Port of Entry (POE) letter and fly to Canada
Work Rights for Students
- On‑campus: unlimited hours
- Off‑campus: 20 hours/week during academic sessions, full‑time during scheduled breaks (summer, winter)
- Co‑op/internship: requires co‑op work permit (included with study permit for eligible programs)
After Graduation PGWP
- Graduates from eligible DLI programs can apply for Post‑Graduation Work Permit (up to 3 years)
- PGWP is an open work permit (valid until Dec 31, 2026 under current rules)
- Important: Maintain full‑time status each semester. Two failed courses or part‑time semesters can lead to permit cancellation.
